last saturday

mad rush for last minute christmas shopping... it was cold and windy!! but first things first... sweater for me (picture to come later)

...not sure what the idea is, but comme de garcons has this "sparkling party" theme... it's very fun and cute... and they have gift-ready things with sparkle-y things for sale. Pefumes, the kaws leather goods and tee-shirts look like the perfect gift ideas. I ended up not buying anything from the Sparkling Party series, but managed to get a shopping bag!!

to end the day of frantic x-mas shopping, we ended the day with the a homemade (key) lime pie... yumm!

new series! photos taken while walking to work

i love the way the background (and some of the subject matter, me) is blurry, but some parts are sharp! this is what i love about photography.. like the lens shift/tilt thing, and lomo stuff.

apple store opening

On Friday, i squeezed into the 14th Street Apple Store. The security wasn't letting anyone else get in line by the time i got there (very long line still at 10pm) but i managed to, uh, talk to a manager. The store was crazy, more so than the other openings... i thought, maybe with the iphone, apple had attracted a whole new demographic of fans (not just the geeks).... but a friend explained that apple had been announcing all day on the radio that the store was going to be giving lots of stuff away (see what ifo says).... not just ipods but laptops too! anyway, i walked away with a $10 itunes gift card... well, better than nothing, right?... i was just happy to be inside! anyway, the store is really beautiful, and unlike all the others.. the space has such huge windows that it will have tons of sunlight during the day! and for a grey day, or at night, they have lots of lights to make the space look really bright!

west 14th street

Sweet! They're gonna be open until midnight!!

getting old?

i used to make a lot of seedbead jewelry... in junior high? anyway, haven't made that kind of stuff in awhile (although i do still have all the beads, string, findings etc. to 'whip one up').... anyway, like i said in an earlier post, J's bracelet broke, and i just finished re-stringing it... i think i have a headache now from looking at something so close and minuscule! It was difficult to look at the thread (clear nylon) and the tiny little beads... yup, i think i'm gonna need bifocals soon!

anyway, here is the finished results... there were a few casualties (a couple beads rolled off my desk), but you can't tell, right?

Sunday, December 2

had dinner at Dressler last night... it was yummy! more fancy than i thought it would be (it's in williamsburg, and i guess i assumed that it would be a bunch of hipsters at the restaurant)... restaurant was filled with an older crowd... kind of looked like the overflow from Peter Lugers (it's in the same block). anyway, the interior/atmosphere was nice... kind of a dark, gothic feel, without being overbearing (although i thought the chandeliers looked kind of scary). nice lighting though (not too dark that i can't see the food, but everyones faces are illuminated with candlelight). I had a regular salad and a pork chop and hazelnut semifreddo and J had beets salad, lamb, and a pineapple tart. It's definitely a 'special occasion' restaurant, but definitely worth going back. all the food was well season with a mixture of tastes. Also, portions weren't too big, except for my semifreddo (Way Too Much!)...

here is a picture of the semifreddo:

not sure if you can tell the size, but this 'tower' of frozen cream was about 4 inches tall!

this is baldie. He live in the Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary. This sanctuary is a neat place... i guess kind of like a 'rest area' for birds during their migration, and also just a place to 'chill-out' for the locals. anyway, we stumbled (almost literally) onto baldie in this huge aviary for several macaws, other large parrots, turkey-like things and um, quails (yeah.. i didn't get it either). anyway, all the birds are moving around, eating, squak-ing, doing their thing. As we neared the exit, baldie came swooping down, hopped down onto the ground and walked up so that he was right behind my feet! J alerted me, and i was immediately scared that he was gonna go "jurassic park" on me. He started biting at my shoe laces, so, i quickly moved away, and baldie walked over to J, biting at his shoes and making a purring sound.... it was so cute! anyway we later learned that he had been hand-raised and therefore very trusting of humans.

now, more than ever, i want to have a bird!

one of the few things i bought i barbados... a little seed bead bracelet. not sure why it is red and white, but it was the right size and the merchant was very nice. J got one as well, but his broke right away!

(btw, can you tell that i got a little tan? My hands are looking more and more like 'old-lady' hands!)

i couldn't agree with #1 more...

(from the new monocle magazine)

how does barneys know?

leaving again

getting ready for another trip. this one is going to be different... a bit of an adventure for us, as we've never been on a "relaxing" vacation. I hope everything works out. I'll be back with lots of pictures (do you think this sd card is big enough?)

blue goose

(i tried to take pictures of the food, but too dark in the restaurant)

here is what we had:

(thanks tony!)

the subways and streets weren't as quiet as i thought they'd be this morning.... i guess everyone hasn't left the city yet.

I am not sure i am ready for this holiday season.... maybe my mood is melancholy because i am reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. I had such a hard time figuring out what i wanted to eat for lunch at whole foods... no beef, not right now, not while i am reading about the feed lots and how even though with the Mad Cow scare, the beef industry still feed the cows fat from other cows (to get them to 'bulk-up' faster)... not to mention all the antibiotics that are given to them so they don't get too sick from eating corn. I really could go on and on about this... so, just go get the book and read it... it's super well written (i'm not one for reading lots of non-fiction, but i can't put this book down, i've come close to missing my subway stop several times).

I think everyone in America should be informed about this stuff.

so, now that christmas time is upon us... there's lots of stuff to buy!!

this, that, or... both?

Super Mario Galaxy or Guitar Hero III?

J says that SMG is getting rave reviews.. and it's a game i would like to play, having played all the oldies (Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2... then Super Mario Sunshine). Sunshine was difficult and i don't think i even got half way through!

But i'm compelled to get GH3... just 'cause i happen to kick ass on it (or at least kick J's ass)... although, it involves a) deciding on whether to get it for the Wii or PS3 and b) getting new controllers...

so, i think i need your help:

oh.... egg nog!

probably because it is not available all year round (i think... not that i'd want to drink it in the summertime)... i really like egg nog. But because of my stomach sensitivity to dairy... it really does kind of kill my stomach. oh well...

Sunday, November 4

My sweet tooth is acting up these days... maybe because it is getting colder, and i want to 'bulk up' for the cold days ahead? This picture is of the dessert platter at Matsuri. A fun restaurant to go with a group of people. It looks kind of cheezy, but it's a nice festive atmosphere (matsuri = festival).

I also had to go to the Apple store this weekend and have my iphone checked out. the speaker was sounding very quiet and distorted... without any questions, they gave me new one. what can i say, i love apple and in particular, the Fifth Ave. store. I've so far taken two things to the "geniuses" (took back a macbook pro last year) and walked out of the store with the brand-new products. not sure what the magic is, maybe it's because Apple is raking it in. I am looking forward to the Meatpacking District Apple store, as that one will be close to my workplace...

it's been a long week.

new york magazine

current issue of New York Magazine is about design and profiles a interesting variety of new york home designers. It's interesting to see the trends and ideas that look retro/cool now (Zeisel), or dated (D'Urso), or super slick futuristic (Calatrava).

STUNNING! it doesn't list the estimate for the auction, but i am going to guess... $5 Million?

H. P.

forgot for a second how excellent the Harry Potter books are and how affected i was by the last one...

this article brought it all back (including the tears!). If you haven't finished the last book (errh, J), do not read, it includes spoilers!!

strange though, i never thought dumbledore as gay... hmmmm...

friday nite

*bowl of yogurt & honey for dessert

so happy it's friday!!

Thursday, October 18

phil collins

i've been going through a Phil Collins phase lately.... it all started when Flora was talking about a This American Life story about break-ups, and it featured the song "Against All Odds" by Phil. Then, in Tokyo, J and i went to Shimokitazawa (recommended by hajime) and stumbled upon a record store, and bought a 12" single of "Don't Lose My Number".

I was never crazy about any of these songs back when they were popular, but they were SO popular, that they are embedded in my memory/childhood.

Oh, the sweet sounds of the Eighties.... they just don't make music like they used to.

which boots?

please help me decide:

ann demeulemeester combat boots

sartore calf boots

tokyo 2007

not sure where to start... plus i'm tired and hungry right now so i'm not thinking too clearly. well, here is a flickr photoset.

highlights and/or observations (in no particular order, but just the way my brain is remembering right now):

* for some reason, i thought it wasn't going to be a crazy trip and that i was getting older, and things would seem "not-so-different" from nyc.... WRONG. very, very wrong.

* the multitude of things that are made in USA and classic american things from an era that most people here (in the USA) don't appreciate or might not even know about. It's unbelievable the things that J and I bought, that are made in the USA, but only available in Japan.

* stumbling upon an onigiri cafe in daikanyama

* not a lot of consideration for the disabled or elder (or my climacophobia) in tokyo, in regards to stairways into stores: Nike 1 Love, United Bamboo omotesando and this crazy store in daikanyama where my legs were trembling going down the concrete stairway with no railing.

*Most store clerks are super nice... sometimes a little overbearing, but they all mean well. Best store clerk/sales person award: to the guy at Fames who stopped us on the street to let us know the story behind a new era hat that J got a couple days before.

ANA flight #1

Waiting to board, originally uploaded by yuko 'n sherlock.

sitting at Dulles airport waiting to board. Nice view of our plane.

Wednesday, October 3

kanye wearing a piping-light-up jacket on SNL when he sang Stronger.

I know it's cheezy, but i do like this song. maybe it's just because i really like the original, and anything that incorporates Harder Better Faster Stronger is gonna get a thumbs up from me (not unlike the Daft Hands person on youtube)....

Tuesday, October 2

Was in a shop over the weekend, looking for a birthday present for someone. A salesperson asked if I needed help, and i explained that I was looking for
a gift. He then pulls out a cardigan off the shelf and
says, "this cardigan here is so CHOICE"...

um... That takes me back
to, is it "Pretty In Pink"? Was that something Duckie said? Yeah, I
admit I used that word, in junior high, thinking I was so cool and
hip, but now? and in such a contrived and/or forced way? I moved
away from him and continued looking on my own. The strange
coincidence is that all this week i've been listening to music from
John Hughes films. I've been debating which one is my favorite:
